Hearing Through Irish, At Mainstream School

Amy Jordan, a student at a mainstream (Irish-speaking) gaelscoil in Dublin, shares her experiences with exams and teachers while using a FM system with hearing-aids at school.

    Great article- hope she gets better support for the Leaving Cert as lip reading all day can be very tiring like I had to in school and at university. Best of luck to her! I’m impressed that she is learning Irish; I wish I had the opportunity at school, but I prefer to be fluent in ISL than the Irish language as I use it in everyday life.

    Delighted to see this article as my daughter attends a gaelscoil, is hearing impaired and seems to have no problems with bilingualism, not so happy to read about the lack of support. i totally agree that deaf and hearing impaired students should not be exempt from learning irish or any other language.

    Hi Mairead, it’s good to know of other students with hearing issues attending gaelscoileanna – thanks for mentioning your daughter’s placement. Educational supports can vary by region, which is worth knowing, and raising with the SENO as relevant. And when learning additional languages, internet tools can be a big help as you’ll know from reading IDK’s links. In school I learned French and, more recently, Spanish – feel free to drop us a line, for a chat or for tips and advice as needed.
