Being a girl can help, at times. Especially when pitches to win tickets to [inter]national events are offered in an attempt to redress the gender imbalance in the IT industry.
This specific event was Web Summit 2014 in Dublin, one capital in the internet of things (IoT) with Santander (Spain), Chicago (US) and Christchurch (New Zealand).
A double of sorts resulted from the ticket pitches submitted, with a free 3-day pass to the summit from one pitch, plus a valued invitation to an evening reception with the new US ambassador to Ireland, Kevin O’Malley, at his residence in Dublin’s Phoenix Park.
Definitely an extra stop on the #nightsummit circuit. Many thanks to @USAmbIreland and @USEmbassyDublin for hosting. pic.twitter.com/8Kmh6aatjC

The moral: It pays to pitch. If you’re not in, you can’t win. A good motto to live by.
