The Visiting Teacher Service: Background Details

What is a Visiting Teacher? Many parents of newly-confirmed deaf children ask this, on learning of the VT service from the Department of Education.

Over 3,300 deaf and hard-of-hearing children at mainstream schools in Ireland, are supported by 32 visiting teachers working in 29 full-time posts.

Parents can access the Visiting Teacher service via the Department of Education website.

  • Contact your local Visiting Teacher (list of regional teachers with email & phone details)

It’s only when a child is confirmed as being deaf, that families discover the support of this vital service. Here are a few personal accounts from parents.

    Hi,

Just wanted to pay a very deserved compliment to our visiting teacher Kathleen Dunleavy. This lady has a vocation and was just an amazing support to me and my family. Thanks, Kathleen.

Can anyone tell me what is the eligibility criteria for the visiting teacher service? My 7yr old daughter has been told by ENT that she will require hearing aids. She has had persistent fluid in her ears causing very significant hearing loss and has done well with several sets of grommets. Unfortunately her eardrums cannot tolerate any more grommets and she still has hearing loss so she has now been referred for aids. If the visiting teacher service were available to her it would be invaluable in getting her to use her aids and supporting ourselves and the school with her learning. Is the service only available to those with permanent hearing loss?
    Many thanks. Gillian

Hi Gillian, if you write to the visiting teacher service with copies of your daughter’s recent medical reports, this is a first step towards support from the service. Their contact points nationally are in this flyer.
    Best of luck – Caroline

Teaching students to self-advocate is a big part of this service:
