A teacher just contacted IDK to advise that a young deaf pupil had arrived in her class without prior notice, and what were the next steps to take? For anyone else who may be in the same position, here’s some advice: 1) Ask your pupil’s parents/guardian if their hearing has been tested and if hearing aids are worn – in one, or both ears? What exactly can they hear? Childrens’ hearing assistance entitlements are summarised on this website. 2) Has a HSE assessment been completed? Depending on your pupil’s needs, this will identify the educational and life supports they’re entitled to. Assessments are described in the parents’ section of Irish Deaf Kids. 3) Next, contact the Visiting Teacher Service about educational supports. These specialist teachers advise on education & provide a home-school link. Most deaf pupils have some hearing, especially with aids. Make sure to work with their abilities – and to run a classroom that promotes diversity. Check out our tips for teachers of young deaf children on the website …
